We wanted a WAWWA bag that fitted simewhere between a classic messenger bag and some of the more modern water resistant messenger bags available. The strap needed to be minimal, so a padded shoulder strap was out of the question. It needed to have a large main compartment, so interior pockets where not a great choice if we wanted to maximise storage space - ruling out a padded laptop compartment too.
The bag also needed easy access, to make it work when carrying small items as well as large. A large open ended recycled zip was the choice for the fastening. The seams also needed to be reinforced in order to carry some weight. We opted for no flap, to keep the design streamlined and as close to a classic messenger bag as possible.
The material for the shoulder bag body was the most important pick to ensure we got the right features. Lightweight, tough, able to protect stuff, water resistant to save your camera or ipad from getting wet in the rain. And the life of the material needed to matter.
We went for Organic Ripstop Cotton with a waxed water resistant finish. All seams reinforced to protect the bags integrity. Tough metal G-Hooks where also chosen to attach the shoulder bag straps to the main compartment.
And to keep your belongings secure everyday, you can reproof your bag to extend it's life. Keeping your stuff protected from the wet.
The main difference between messenger bags and backpacks is that messenger bags are crossbody bags or shoulder bags whereas backpacks have two shoulder straps. Messenger bags where originally designed for carrying small items where easy access was needed. As loading out of the bag is easy due to the wearer being able to swing it over there shoulder. A backpack however needs to be taken off. Because the main compartment is close to the body with messenger bags, it makes it easier to quickly search for money and to grab other light essentials that the bag fits. The single strap that usally comes on messenger bags also offers a different style to a backpack with a slim profile. However, occasionaly this may be referred to as a black messenger backpack.
This style of shoulder bags are called messenger bags because they were originally designed and made for messengers or couriers who carried loads across cities (usually on bikes) and needed quick access to the main compartment. The single strap meant they could be rotated around the body quickly, which really did matter when they were making quick deliveries. The light weight was also necessary due to the way the weight is distributed across the body.
They will should never go out of style, as they will always be one of the most stylish shoulder bags for carrying your essentials everyday such as your camera or ipad. You could argue they are peak design, the single crossbody strap make it one of the most stylish features everyday for years to come.
